I always wondered if Citrus at 12 months was evidence based

In my house call based practice I spend lots of time talking to families about adding foods for babies. A few of these rules are hard and fast. Many are subjective. There are a many baby food books out there now days that have conflicting information. When babies are six months and their tongue thrust goes away, moms can pick that first meal time at their convenience. The rule of citrus has always been none until 12 months due to the acidity of the fruit and resulting diaper rash. A whirlwind weekend at the doctor mom compound resulted in feeding citrus to our 8 month old. I came home to find her face caked in juice and hair covered in pulp. Hmm.. an experiment... I thought. Let's see if I've been telling parents for 10 years not to give a baby citrus for any particularly good reason. Sure enough the next day her butt was as red as a valentine... So I maintain no citrus until 12 months... That's all for now... Doctor Mom
